Obituary for Florence Godsey Jones
Florence Godsey Jones of Jackson, Ky went home to be with the Lord on July 20, 2021 at home surrounded by her family and those who loved her most. Born on September 30, 1930 to the late Florence Combs Godsey and Dave Godsey Sr. she spent most of her early years on Cow Branch in Breathitt County. Florence knew many hardships and struggles in her formative years. Her early home was remote, crowded, and no stranger to the struggles of scarcity. Florence would ultimately channel these pains and adversities into productivity, earning a masters degree from Morehead State University after having given birth to her three children James David Campbell (Kimberley), Rachel Anita Adams (Larry), and Joyce Campbell Erp (Farmer) and going on to work as an educator in a career that spanned three decades with the Perry County School District. Florence cherished her role in molding young minds. Throughout her retirement she relished in encountering former students and seeing the value they were adding to their community and reminding those who may have hit a snag along the way that, just as she had known all those years ago, it’s never too late to do better.

Florence was a loving mother, wife to three husbands (George Campbell, widowed; Virgil Holbrook, widowed; Kelsey Jones, widowed), cherished sister, dedicated teacher, and wonderful friend to so many but the role she seemed to cherish most was that of Grandmother. She was Grandmother to four Grandchildren (Heather, Larry Stephen, Joe, and Derek Jorge) and a newly minted great grandmother (Rhys Franklin) loving and caring for each, nurturing in her own way. There can be no doubt though that through the years she always had her favorite. Derek Jorge Campbell is more her fourth and favored child than grandchild with her proclaiming until the death of her being “that’s my son”. It was evident through their nearly 29 years together that even the title of “son” wasn’t sufficient, they were one another’s enduring comfort, constant concern, point of pride, and the brightest spot in each other’s lives.

Florence had a love for people of all stripes, she believed that each life had a unique perspective with value to offer and a love to share. That was a warm spirit cultivated through years of tests and trials and her unyielding faith in a redeeming God who never failed to bring her safely through. Florence was a born again Christian and would invite you to find that same love that transformed her life as well. Our lives are fundamentally better for the fact that she was the bedrock of them and as the family grieves the loss of her extraordinary presence in this earthly realm we invite those in the communities that she made fuller to join with us at the Watts Funeral Home in Jackson, Ky on Friday at 12 noon for visitation and 2 o’clock in the afternoon for a funeral service with internment following thereafter at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Hazard, Ky that we may all find comfort in knowing that the woman who brought such light to our eyes has now touched the face of God.
